Some folks appear to have it all – and everything they do seems to fall easily into place. Conversely, others struggle with everything they do, and can always give you a reason why life is so difficult. It usually comes down to attitude, where the victors maintain a good attitude, and the victims maintain a poor one.

If your goal is to lose twenty pounds, you must have the victor mentality in order to succeed. A piece-meal attempt at dieting without the belief is why the ‘victim’ will never win. Victors commit mentally to a successful conclusion, and back their actions with emotion.

Let’s envision we’re on court for a tennis finale. We listen to the players before the start – One player says the outcome is now in the lap of the gods, whereas his opponent states “I am destined to be the champion!” It’s not difficult to predict who’ll win the tournament.

We can define the victor by the word OAR (Ownership, Accountability and Responsibility) – a person rowing towards success. On the other hand the victim is characterised by ‘BED’ – he/she stays in bed and is defeated. (BED stands for Blame, Excuses and Denial).

The victor ‘owns’ his own tasks, and doesn’t hope for someone else to take the lead. He’s accountable for his actions, and so takes them seriously, seeing things through by tackling problems not creating them. He takes responsibility for the consequences of his actions, and doesn’t allow himself to make excuses.

However, as far as the victim is concerned, it’s never his fault when he doesn’t achieve. It’s always someone else’s fault – he feels out of control so justifies it by blaming someone else. And then he reasons why something didn’t go well – although no-one’s convinced but him! The victim is in complete denial after a while, assured that he has no option but to put up with this situation.

Slimmers about to embark on a life-changing fat loss regime should give themselves a mental work-out, to prepare for success. Anyone who’s a fully paid up member of the victim society will have to address their issues before they start, to truly embrace the concept of losing weight.

Continual positive repetition will change a victim’s attitude to that of a victor. Listen to that little voice in your head – if it’s obviously a victim, then consciously stop it and state why you can accomplish your goal. No one is any better than you – some have just fought their downturns and emerged victorious.

“There is no such thing as a hero,” as Churchill said, “only those who rise to the occasion.” We need to have a winning outlook on life in order to become a winner in the weight-loss arena.
